The origins of Edo Kiriko date back to 1834 in the late Edo Period (modern-day Tokyo), when a glass merchant named Kagaya Kyubei began engraving intricate patterns onto glass surfaces using emery sand.
Over nearly two centuries, the craft evolved by blending traditional Japanese motifs with advanced European glass-cutting techniques introduced during the Meiji era. Recognized officially by the Japanese government as a National Traditional Craft, Edo Kiriko is celebrated worldwide for its breathtaking geometric precision, sharp refractive clarity, and fluid interplay of light.
