TEA PETS

Tea pets are small clay or ceramic figurines traditionally placed on a Chinese tea tray. They are not merely decorative, but gentle companions in the tea ritual.

Most tea pets are made from unglazed Yixing clay, allowing them to absorb tea over time. During tea preparation, the first rinse or leftover tea is often poured over the tea pet, a practice known as “feeding” it.

With regular use, the tea pet develops a smooth, glossy patina. Common forms include the three-legged money frog, the Chinese zodiac animals, and other auspicious symbols associated with luck and harmony.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I "feed" or season my tea pet?
During your tea session, simply pour your "rinse" (the first wash of the leaves) or any leftover tea over the figurine. You can also use a tea brush to paint the tea onto specific details. Over time, the porous clay will absorb the tea oils, changing from a matte finish to a deep, glossy patina.

2. Should I only use one type of tea for my tea pet?
While not as strict as a Yixing teapot, many collectors prefer to feed their pet only one category of tea (like Puerh or Oolong). This ensures the "glow" and scent developed by the clay remain consistent and pure.

3. Do I need to wash my tea pet with soap?
Never use soap. Just like a Yixing teapot, the clay will absorb chemical scents. Simply rinse your pet with plain hot water if it gets dusty. The "seasoning" is essentially a layer of tea oils, so soap would strip away all your hard work!

4. Why does my tea pet change color?
Some of our specialized tea pets are made with thermchromic materials. When you pour hot water (above 50°C) over them, they change color instantly, returning to their original shade as they cool down. It is a fun way to check if your water is hot enough for brewing!

5. How long does it take for a tea pet to develop a patina?
With daily use, you will see a subtle change in the clay's texture within 2 to 3 months. A deep, glass-like luster usually takes a year or more of consistent "feeding." At Jiangnan Sourcing, we believe this slow transformation is part of the meditative joy of tea.
