Kui Fang Gu – A Masterpiece of Ribbed Elegance by Zhong Fei

The Kui Fang Gu teapot (葵仿古) is a sophisticated Yixing Zisha creation by Assistant Craft Master Zhong Fei (助理工艺美术师). Zhong Fei is celebrated for his precision in executing the "Jin Wen Qi" (ribbed) style—one of the most difficult classical forms to master. Made from premium Purple Clay (Zi Ni), this pot represents a harmonious blend of the traditional "Fang Gu" (Drum) shape and the rhythmic lines of a sunflower, symbolizing vitality, growth, and balance.

Its 260cc capacity is exceptionally versatile, making it the perfect choice for sharing a session with friends or for those who prefer a more generous brew of Oolongs, aged Sheng Pu-erh, or hearty Black teas. The Purple Clay’s natural porosity enhances the tea's body, rounding out the flavors for a smooth, lingering finish.

Why Choose the Kui Fang Gu?

  • Masterful Symmetry: The ribbed "Kui" design requires the meticulous skill of an artist like Zhong Fei to ensure every line aligns perfectly from the lid’s knob down to the base

  • Aromatic Enhancement: The authentic Zi Ni clay is prized for its ability to retain high heat and soften the astringency of high-fired teas, making every pour more velvety.
  • Investment Piece: Crafted by a recognized Assistant Craft Master, this teapot ensures both functional excellence for daily use and long-term collectibility.

The Art of the Kui Fang Gu
The Kui Fang Gu (葵仿古) is a sophisticated evolution of the classic Fang Gu (Drum) shape. The "Kui" (Sunflower) refers to the rhythmic, vertical ribbing—a technique known as Jin Wen Qi (筋纹器) or Ribbed Ware. This style requires extraordinary precision; each of the segments must align perfectly from the lid’s knob through the body to the base. This geometry symbolizes the mathematical harmony found in nature and is one of the most technically demanding forms in Yixing pottery.

The Maker: Zhong Fei (钟飞)
This piece is authored by Zhong Fei, a recognized Assistant Craft Master (助理工艺美术师). Zhong Fei is highly regarded in the Yixing community for his mastery of "bone" and "flesh"—the structural integrity and surface finish of a pot. His expertise in rib-alignment ensures that the lid fits with seamless, airtight precision. Collectors value his work for its blend of functional excellence and the quiet, dignified aesthetic of traditional Zisha art.

Purple Clay (Zi Ni) Heritage
Crafted from authentic Zi Ni (Purple Clay), this material is prized for its balanced porosity and excellent heat retention. Sourced from traditional Yixing deposits, Zhong Fei’s choice of Zi Ni develops a warm, lustrous patina over time, "seasoning" with your tea to enhance the body and soften the astringency of high-fired Oolongs and aged Pu-erhs.
