The Song Dynasty (960–1279) produced some of the most refined botanical and bird-and-flower paintings in Chinese art history — a genre known as huaniaohua (花鸟画), practiced by court artists who observed the natural world with extraordinary precision and patience. Painters such as Huang Quan and Xu Xi established two defining schools: one meticulous and richly colored, the other loose and ink-washed.
