📜 The Origin of Lapsang Souchong
Recognized as the first black tea in history, Lapsang Souchong dates back over 400 years to the late Ming Dynasty. By the early 17th century, it had already entered global trade through the Dutch East India Company, becoming one of the earliest Chinese teas exported to Europe.
At a time when green tea dominated the European market, this richly flavored black tea quickly gained popularity, eventually shaping the global black tea tradition.
It is also the ancestor of many famous black teas, including Keemun Black Tea, which was later developed in Anhui using techniques originating from Tongmu.
🔥 Legends Behind the Pine Aroma
The Soldiers’ Accident
During the Ming Dynasty, troops passing through Tongmu occupied local tea facilities, delaying production. To salvage the harvest, farmers dried the leaves over pinewood fires—accidentally creating the now-iconic aroma.
The Village That Rebuilt
In another legend, bandits destroyed a tea workshop. Villagers salvaged their harvest and finished it over pinewood from a damaged timber shed. The resulting tea surprised traders with its unique flavor—and a new tradition was born.
